Realizing the limitations of both the pocket .380 and the subcompact 9mm, gun manufacturers sought to create a weapon that had the best of both worlds. This led them to produce a compact .380 caliber pistol.
In this article, we'll take a look at the compact .380 to see if it's a legitimate choice for concealed carry. We also test several compact .380 models to see if any stand out from the crowd.
Popular compact .380 models include the Walter PK380 and Ruger LC380. They are similar in size to the 9mm subcompact but fire the lower powered .380 ACP cartridge from pocket pistols. At first glance, these weapons don't seem to make much sense. If you can carry a 9mm Ruger LC9, why would you want to carry a similarly sized Ruger LC380 that fires a low-powered .380 ACP cartridge?
Right now my pistol of choice is the 9mm S&W Shield. I carry it on my hip in a Blade-Tech holster. I carried this gun for half a dozen years. While this is a proven feat for me, something interesting happened on a recent shoot with my dad. My father, in his mid-70s, couldn't muster the strength to grip the breech of my shield and pull it back to load the gun. He was fine and could fire the gun once I got it moving, but after emptying the magazine it was very difficult for him to charge the battery.

This reflected my experience working at a gun shop here in Florida. When people come into the store looking for a defensive handgun, the first thing we direct them to is something like a Glock 19. But a lot of retirees have found these guns difficult to operate. They were also skeptical of the long, stiff trigger on most defensive revolvers. A compact .380 pistol like the one in our test is not the best choice for a self-defense weapon. The .380ACP shotgun is moderately effective as a defensive round. It is less powerful than 9mm or other common defense cartridges, and as such struggles to meet FBI ballistics requirements.
However, this does not mean that the .380ACP is an ineffective defensive round. All guns in our tests could easily shoot in a 6-inch circle at 15 yards. This means that if the shooter can make the shot, they can make it with any of these weapons.
Also, on average, all of these guns require less physical effort than the 9mm. We tested the Glock 19 on the same weights we used for slide and pull to see how it compared to these rifles. With more than 26 pounds of effort and an average trigger pull of 6.75, the Glock 19 requires more physical strength than the Ruger LC380, Shield 380EZ, or Walther PK380 to master basic gun control.

The Walther is a gun I really like and with a great trigger, easy to carry slide and best in class accuracy the only thing that keeps me from liking it more is the odd mechanism. It is the safety of his own hands.
